WMUR is one of the biggest television news stations in New Hampshire. I recently visited there, along with the rest of the Rams Record newsclub. Here is what I found out. WMUR was founded in 1954 by a man named Francis Murphy, hence the MUR in the station’s call sign letters. WMUR started off as a radio station, and became a TV station in about the early 60’s, when most Americans had at least one TV in their home.
WMUR is an ABC affiliate, which means they sometimes air shows from the ABC TV network, such as The Middle. Some of you may be wondering if WMUR was affiliated with other major networks, such as NBC, at one point. The station has been affiliated with ABC for a long time. WMUR is owned by a company called Hearst. Hearst owns about 25 other stations, one of them being WESH, out of Orlando, Florida. Because they’re all owned by the same company, doesn’t really mean that they’re all ABC affiliated. WESH is affiliated with NBC.
WMUR still keeps past broadcasts on DVtapes and Betacam tapes(like a VHS, but bigger). However, in this day and age, you can buy a 2 terabyte(equal to 2,048 gigabytes) hard drive. I would expect them to upgrade to hard drive based storage, or at least a little more modern media, such as DVD. I am unsure when they plan to do this. Even though I say this, WMUR still has servers that help deliver content to their website. and upcoming weather, almost as if you were watching it on television. To access it, open your favorite web browser, then go to the WMUR website. Then hover over weather, then click on videocast. Likewise, they do a similar thing with the news.
To know some behind-the-scenes things about WMUR, or ways that their content is stored and delivered, now you know. For those of you who aren’t aware, like I wrote above, WMUR has a website. It allows you to catch up on the latest news, weather, and sports. They even post a videocast where a meteorologist will show you a radar map, and current weather conditions.

P.S.  Note the BRAND NEW WMUR 9 LOGO!!!! In keeping with our pledge to have a “Hard Head for News”, we promised to keep you apprised of the rumor that WMUR would be adopting a new logo, and keep you apprised we have!!! :)
